The following are risk factors that increase your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes:

  • The risk for diabetes increases with age, therefore persons 45 or older are at a higher risk
  • Being overweight
  • Being sedentary
  • Having a family history of diabetes
  • Having high cholesterol
  • Having high blood pressure
  • Certain racial and ethnic groups (e.g., Non-Hispanic Blacks, Hispanic/Latino Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, American Indians and Alaska Natives)
  • Women who had gestational diabetes or who have had a baby weighing 9 pounds or more at birth
