Maintaining a healthy, safe and secure work environment is a top priority for our hospital. A multidisciplinary team, which includes our safety and infection control managers, conducts regular rounds to evaluate clinical and non-clinical areas for safety and gather feedback for improvement.
Much of our focus is on reducing and preventing the number of injuries resulting from repetitive motion, back strain, and needle sticks, as well as injuries caused by slips and falls. For example, we have implemented an ergonomics program and have dedicated an occupational therapist to oversee this effort.
We measure workplace safety by tracking the number of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) recordable non-fatal injuries per 1,000 fulltime equivalent (FTE) employees. In 2006, we reduced the rate of recordable, non-fatal injuries to less than the state average. This decrease happened in part because of the growth of our workforce but also because of our continued focus on ergonomics training and prevention of needle sticks.
