On July 2, in honor of National Obesity Week (July 1-7) as well as the July 4th holiday, Avocados from Mexico (AFM) will host a healthy cooking demonstration and live health panel discussion at White Memorial Medical Center (WMMC). The healthy cooking demonstration and live health panel will continue to expand AFM’s relationship with White Memorial, to only include sponsorship of the important Healthy Eating Lifestyle Program (HELP), but to reach kids and employees with important nutritional and healthy eating tips.
The demonstration will feature Celebrity Chef Aquiles Chavez, famous in America through his four television shows, El toque de Aquiles, Aquilísimo, Aquiles en Houston and MotoChefs (co-hosted by Aaron Sanchez.)
From 4-5 PM, in the hospital’s café, Chef Aquiles will host students from the HELP and Diabetes programs and conduct a hands-on cooking lesson featuring simple, healthy and delicious avocado-themed recipes. He will discuss the importance of fresh, traditional ingredients, answer questions and motivate students to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Following the healthy cooking demonstration, Chef Aquiles and Doctora Aliza, renowned physician, author, health reporter and the voice behind VidaySalud.com, will headline a health panel. The panel will feature White Memorial’s own Teresa Baczkowski and Ruth Pulpo, among others.
HELP and Diabetes program students and parents will engage in a detailed question and answer session. Discussions will center on healthy eating and lifestyle tips during the holiday weekend, simple ways to eat better, and helpful tips to avoid weight gain and prevent diabetes, which continues to be rampant in the Latino community. The hospital café will also be featuring an avocado themed menu with avocado breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes.
