Excellent Performance Starts With Excellent People

CAPE LogoCongratulations to our physicians, leadership team and staff for making White Memorial Medical Center one of 11 organizations to receive the California Award for Performance Excellence (CAPE) Silver Eureka Award this year. This is WMMC’s fourth statewide award for performance excellence. Here are a few facts about this important accomplishment.

What is CAPE?

The California Award for Performance Excellence (CAPE) is a statewide quality award program that uses the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria to assess organizational performance in key business categories, including: leadership and social responsibility, strategic planning, customer focus, human resources, and business results.

Why do we participate?

Because we’re passionate about excellence. We want to be an excellent place to work, practice medicine and receive care. Participation is voluntary, so it shows our commitment to continuous improvement. Plus, we get feedback from business leaders from other sectors who understand organizational performance really well.

What did WMMC do to receive this award?

  1. It starts with a very rigorous application process. The 50-page application describes how WMMC operates in all of the key business categories.

  2. An independent board of examiners evaluates applicants based on sound approaches, complete implementation, sustained improvements and results.

  3. The organizations that pass the initial review receive a site visit.

  4. After the process is complete, applicants receive written feedback about their strengths and areas for improvement.

How did we do?

White Memorial received a Silver Eureka Award, which means we were one of the best performers among this year’s applicants. Our feedback report showed strengths in leadership and social responsibility, customer and market focus, and staff learning and motivation.

What is a Silver Eureka Award?

The Eureka Award consists of three levels – gold, silver, and bronze. The level of award is based on the total application score. This year, the Silver Award was the highest level of recognition awarded.

Do we have opportunities for improvement?

Absolutely! Our feedback report will be an important tool for us, as it highlights our areas of strength as well as identifies opportunities for improvement. We will use the report to focus on improvement initiatives.
