White Memorial Wins Statewide Award for Performance Excellence

CAPE logoWhite Memorial Medical Center is one of 11 organizations to receive a silver-level California Award for Performance Excellence (CAPE) by the California Council for Excellence (CEC) this year. This was the highest level of recognition this year, as no gold-level awards were awarded. This is WMMC’s fourth statewide award for performance excellence.

“Excellent performance starts with excellent people – physicians, nurses, leadership and other staff. We’re proud of this accomplishment, but we’re most proud of the White Memorial family that makes our hospital a special place to work and receive care,” said Beth Zachary, President & CEO of WMMC.

The prestigious CAPE Award, which emulates the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, recognizes companies and organizations that demonstrate continuous improvement and superior performance in several key business areas, including leadership, social responsibility, customer focus, human resources, and business results.

An independent board of examiners evaluates applicants based on achievements and sustained improvements. Organizations that pass the initial review receive a site visit. Any organization headquartered in California can voluntarily apply for the CAPE Award. After the process is complete, applicants receive written feedback about their strengths and areas for improvement.

“This has been a journey of continuous improvement for us. We’re learning how to make our services better for our patients and their families, how to create a great work environment, and how to be a responsible neighbor in our community,” said Zachary.

Among the other top winners were Boeing’s Air Force Systems division in Long Beach; Sharp Healthcare of San Diego; the American Association of Critical Care Nurses in Aliso Viejo; and Spectrolab in Sylmar. Two other Adventist Health hospitals also received a CAPE award this year: Ukiah Valley Medical Center and Feather River Hospital in Paradise.

The CCE will honor CAPE Award recipients at an award ceremony on Friday, April 7, at the Hyatt Regency Irvine.
