Cancer! It's a disease none of us wants to encounter.
In the past, a cancer diagnosis often meant no hope for recovery. Today, however, thanks to advanced medical technology and medication, there is more hope for those diagnosed with cancer. In fact, early detection can often result in treatment that leads to recovery.
At White Memorial Medical Center, our ability to meet our community's needs has improved dramatically, with the opening of the Cecilia Gonzalez De La Hoya Cancer Center.
The Cancer Center features state-of-the-art equipment that provides advanced treatment to tumors in all sites of the body, to the communities east of downtown Los Angeles. The Cancer Center is located on the White Memorial campus on 1720 Cesar E. Chavez Ave.
Named after the mother of boxing sensation and local hero Oscar De La Hoya, the Center features the latest medical technology and facilities to help cancer patients get a second chance at life and eradicate their tumor.
Treatment Planning Area
Using advanced imaging technology, caregivers use PET/CT, MRI, and CT planning to determine how to best deliver/focus radiation therapy to the patient. The treatment planning system reconstructs the patient's anatomy and tumor volume, allowing more precise delivery of radiation treatment.
This reduces any immediate or long-term side effects to the patient.
Before radiation therapy takes place, a simulator is used to help the physician localize a cancer patient's radiation treatment area, where the tumor is located. This allows the exact treatment area of the cancer patient's body to be identified, in preparation for actual radiation therapy. The physician localizes the treatment area through the simulator, using X-ray and fluoroscopy, a type of X-ray that remains visible on a computer screen for an extended period of time.
The simulator is capable of rotating around the patient's body. After localizing the treatment area, the patient's skin is marked, identifying the area that will receive radiation treatment.
This technologically advanced equipment provides patients with the actual radiation therapy. White Memorial's linear accelerator is among the most powerful and advanced equipment available in the community.
Library / Community Resource Center
The Library/Community Resource Center at the Cancer Center is available for use to anyone in the community. It features a variety of videos, books, brochures and booklets that offer a wealth of facts in English and Spanish on many cancer-related topics. These include education, cancer prevention, nutrition, specific cancer type information, breast cancer detection and Internet cancer research. The Community Resource Center also provides wigs and hat information, makeup information for patients and cancer support resources.
Patient Conference Room
The Conference Room is an important part of the Cancer Center. This room is the site where treatment planning occurs, and where the radiation therapist, radiation oncologist and others often meet to discuss all aspects of a patient's cancer treatment. In this room, community residents also take part in many of our education and outreach programs. They include meetings of support groups, such as our free Latina Breast Cancer Support Group, conducted in Spanish. During these meetings, participants gain emotional support and knowledge by sharing their challenges, fears and concerns. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker moderates the support group, and serves as an informational resource. The Conference Room is also an area where doctors can review patient charts.
As you can see, the Cecilia Gonzalez De La Hoya Cancer Center at White Memorial provides a wide range of services that meet our community's cancer treatment needs. The Center features Spanish-speaking staff. It accepts most health plans, including Medi-Cal.
