The residents in training at the White Memorial Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program have a strong motivation to learn family medicine while working with under-served multicultural populations in a community setting, and a commitment to lifelong professional education.

• Personal Accomplishments: Rebuilding my Volkswagon van engine when I was 16 years old, the time I spent in India and the work I did there, and my postdoc year at UCLA looking at histone tail modifications and their role on cellular metabolism.

• Personal Accomplishments: My proudest accomplishment is being the first in my family to complete a college education and graduate from medical school. Although my parents immigrated to this country with only a 5th grade education, they taught me the value of hard work from an early age and they always supported my educational endeavors. I am also proud of having completed two marathons in my lifetime.

Being raised by immigrant parents, the concept of hard work and striving for improvement while maintaining a humble personality has been instilled in me. Because of my parent’s sacrifices, I was able to attend undergraduate and medical school and therefore become the first doctor in my family. In addition, I make every effort to maintain balance in my life so the stressors of being a physician will not interfere with the relationships I have with my family and friends.

• Personal Accomplishments: Packing up my car and driving 3,000 miles across the United States to start residency in California! Hiking the Grand Canyon, traveling extensively throughout europe and the Americas and teaching dance and choreography during high school, college and medical school.

• Personal Accomplishments: Finished the San Francisco Marathon alongside my brother in 1996, revived my hometown’s historic Chinese school in 2001, graduated from college with highest honors from UCLA’s Mathematics Department, elected Medical Student of the Year at the Paul Hom Asian Free Clinic in 2009, and elected in a landslide victory to become Special Kitchen Crew Chief to oversee all vegetarian and holiday meals at the University Cooperative Housing Association by a membership of 350 in 1991.

• Personal Accomplishments: I am the first college graduate and physician in my family. As an immigrant from Mexico and having grown up in an underserved community, I am grateful for the opportunity to continue motivating similar individuals to pursue their dreams despite the obstacles confronted. One of my greatest accomplishments has been tutoring/mentoring students from low socioeconomic backgrounds in the LAUSD area and motivating them to pursue a college education.  I am most proud to become part of a specialty that will allow me to positively impact the health of my community through early prevention and education.

• Personal Accomplishments: I had the opportunity to work with the Lao Community of San Diego/Fresno to create a diabetes education video incorporating Lao cultural values and practices. The video aired on Lao satellite television that aired in the United States, Canada, Thailand, Laos and France. It featured at the Lao Community Health Fair in San Diego and won a couple of medical school awards. It was very rewarding to see the community come together and make a positive difference in the health of their friends and families.
