Gifts of Stocks & Securities

Charitable Foundation

Giving Opportunity: Stocks and Securities

If you're considering a significant charitable gift, your stock portfolio might be one of your best choices. Often, stocks have appreciated in value so much over the years that potential donors don't realize how much they have.

Dividends for stock are often low (in the range of two percent to three percent), so this is a gift that most likely will have minimal impact on your day-to-day life, yet represent a tremendous gift to the hospital. Making the same gift with cash would be much more difficult for most people.

Benefits of stock donation include:

  • The opportunity to give a significant gift, the appreciated current value of your stock that cost you considerably less at the time you purchased it.
  • Liberal tax laws that allow you to deduct the entire market value of your stock gift, including the capital appreciation.

Transferring Stock

If your stock is held by a stockbroker:

  • Call your stockbroker and instruct him to make the transfer to "White Memorial Medical Center Charitable Foundation."

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be sure to specify to your stockbroker that he or she must transfer the stock directly into the Charitable Foundation's account, as opposed to selling the stock first and transferring the proceeds. The latter action will cause you to incur a tax on the appreciation.

  • Contact us so that we can provide your stockbroker with our tax identification number and our broker's name.

If you hold the stock yourself and you send the gift by mail, please be sure to sign a stock power for each certificate, then; send the stock power and stock SEPARATELY. Be sure to include your name, address and phone number. This will ensure against fraud if the envelope is lost.

If you would like more information about making a gift to the White Memorial Medical Center Charitable Foundation, please call us at (323) 260-5739.
